A Ray of Hope in a World of Darkness

According to the Freudian concept, humans are inherently evil and must deliberately strive, through social training, education, and psychotherapeutic interventions, to transform into an acceptable personality in society. On the other hand, the humanistic view endorses humans as basically good, suggesting that it is the environment that determines a person’s ultimate character.

It is very interesting that, in one way or another, various psychological approaches support Biblical revelation, albeit indirectly. In light of the fallen state of man, the Freudian argument attests to the scriptural view, though Freud never acknowledged this connection. At the same time, the pre-fallen state of man, as revealed in the Word of God, aligns more closely with the humanistic psychological perspective.

It is also widely accepted among humanity that the social system is inherently flawed. The presence of police, military, and security systems, for instance, attests to the prevalence of evil and corruption in society. The suffering sustained by both the innocent and the wicked in the world today reflects the concept of sin as envisioned by the Bible. Hospitals and medical treatment systems for physical and mental ill-health serve as evidence for the fallen state of humanity. One of the commonly used imageries in Scripture for this prevailing sinful system in the world is darkness.

Light is relevant only in the context of darkness. Mental darkness is more fundamental than physical darkness, but physical darkness seems more tangible. In Biblical revelation, sin began in the spirit (relationship with God), then affected the mind (relationship with oneself), and finally the physical body (relationship with other human beings). All negative emotions are expressions of mental darkness. Neurotic fear, anxiety, frustrations, jealousy, spite, depression, and all erotic thoughts and feelings are forms of self-darkness that result in external manifestations of violence, anarchy, and suicides, among others.

Remembering what God has spoken in Scripture is very important. This is a mental process, but it has a spiritual impact. Forgetting what God has said to us is a foundation for defeat. Peter said he wanted to stir up the minds of believers by way of remembrance. This is one of the reasons why we read and reread the Scriptures again and again, so that they can be hidden in our hearts and always fresh on our minds. In these days, it is important to remind ourselves that God has already spoken to us about such things. Let us look at what God has said: “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: But the LORD shall arise upon you, And his glory shall be seen upon you” (Isaiah 60:1-2).

Those who are enlightened by Jesus, the light of the world, must be very enthusiastic about shining in the dark world. They are not supposed to be covered by the darkness of laziness, disappointment, or depression. Just as light illuminates dark places, Christians must encourage others and bring them out of their dim dens. The Lord says, “the darkness shall cover the earth.” This darkness is not a reference to physical night or the mere absence of light; rather, it signifies the darkness of sin, malevolence, and demonic influences, along with their resultant effects, such as suffering and enslavement. The Lord has already informed us that darkness will envelop the earth. The state of the world is not improving. There is no need for a prophet to convey a dream or vision regarding this matter; it is evident in the Scriptures. The condition of the world is not on an upward trajectory. Nevertheless, He further proclaims, “but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee.” This indicates that even as darkness engulfs the world, the glory of the Lord—a divine light from heaven—will shine upon you.

In times of darkness, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, characterized by loss, anxiety, and global unrest, your existence can be likened to a candle illuminating the shadows. The presence of illness represents this darkness, while healing and well-being symbolize the light. Can you perceive the blessing in this? Amidst a world grappling with severe health crises, you may find yourself in a position of health, capable of offering healing and restoration to those in distress around you. This is the essence of light; it does not merely signify a glow on your face but rather reflects your experience of the Lord’s beauty and excellence, as well as your efforts to share these with others. You will serve as a beacon of hope in a world shrouded in darkness. This suggests that as the world becomes increasingly dim, your life is destined to shine even more brightly. These are indeed the most opportune days to be a Christian.

I understand that these sentiments may be challenging to accept. As darkness intensifies, the manifestation of divine glory will also increase. This means that some individuals who have yet to encounter the power and presence of God will be astonished to discover the extent of His glory at work in their lives, as grace will be abundantly bestowed. You will find yourself speaking to demons and witnessing God’s power in unprecedented ways, observing His influence over your finances, marriage, ministry, and more. In essence, you will experience God in ways that previous generations of Christians could not. This is not a result of your own efforts; it is part of the Lord’s divine plan and purpose for this time.

The grace and accompanying glory of God are magnified in times of increasing darkness. If the Lord does not bestow additional grace, who among us can endure the encroaching shadows? You are not meant to be a part of the darkness that pervades the earth and is yet to come. It is essential to remember that the world is not improving, and you belong not to this world, but to God. The challenge lies in our need to navigate a world that is becoming increasingly dark while steadfastly holding on to the light of God’s power, presence, and glory, without succumbing to fear or being overshadowed by the darkness. Dear ones, rise and shine! Do not allow the current circumstances to overwhelm you. You are the beacon of hope. You are the healing balm for the world. You are a source of comfort and encouragement. You are the light amidst the darkness!
